The densely packed living quarters of Hong Kong

If 'In the Mood for Love' was an exploration of the claustrophobic inter-relationship amongst neighbours in the densely packed living quarters of Hong Kong in the 1960s, and '2046' was an exploration of the city’s imaginary future immediately after the expiration of China’s promise to Thatcher’s British government that Hong Kong’s basic laws and rights will remain unchanged for fifty years, 'Chungking Express' is a snap shot of the apprehension and alienation experienced by contemporary Hong Kongers shortly before the handover (the release of the film, in 1994, was three years prior to the handover from British Colonial rule back to Chinese administration)
