Rosanna Li Wei- han

Yuanyang Qi Shui - Han's Cafe
Ceramic Sculpture by Rosanna Li Wei- han

Rosanna Li Wei-han's ceramic figurines are some of the best contemporary hand-built sculptures in Hong Kong . Plump and fleshy, Li's figurines draw on well-known sources in their form and construction. Immediately springing to mind are the exaggerated proportion of the Venus of Willendorf, the delineated facial features of the Haniwa figurines of Kofun Japan , and, of course, the voluptuousness of the famous Tang dynasty “fat lady”. These ancient references are part of the artist's effort to enhance her work's rawness and primitive connotations. With large feet, round torso and a thick neck, Li's “fatties” have the qualities of an ancient man: unfettered by worldly obligations and yet obscure because of their undefined facial features.
